Why Refilling ADHD Medication Is Harder Than You Think

For many non-ADHD partners, taking medication seems straightforward: schedule an appointment, get a prescription, pick it up at the pharmacy, and take it every day. We rarely stop to think about the process because it feels like second nature. But for many ADHD partners, each of those steps requires planning, sequencing, follow-through, and quick decision-making—all executive function skills that ADHD can make significantly more challenging.

In my latest Insights from the Trenches interview with FindUrMeds founder Sasha Podolsky, we focus on one often-overlooked piece of that puzzle: filling a recurring prescription. Pharmacy logistics, refill timing, medication availability, and other obstacles can all become barriers that disrupt treatment. As Sasha explains, when medication isn't available or isn't filled on time, routines can quickly break down, triggering a domino effect where one small setback leads to many others. Those ripple effects can impact not only the ADHD partner but also the non-ADHD partner and the relationship itself. Understanding these hidden challenges can help both partners replace frustration with empathy and build systems that make daily life a little easier.
