Navigating the medical insurance system in the U.S. can already feel overwhelming — but when it comes to finding the right mental health professional to support ADHD, the process can become even more frustrating and confusing. Whether you are the ADHD partner or the non-ADHD partner trying to support your relationship, many couples quickly discover that understanding insurance coverage, provider networks, diagnoses, referrals, and treatment options is far from simple.
That’s why I was so excited to speak with Ashley Paradise, LMHC, about navigating the mental health insurance system in the U.S. Ashley brings experience from both sides of the system — as a therapist and from working within managed care and insurance providers. During our conversation, she shared several things that I honestly wish I had known years ago. For example, did you know that it is not necessary to receive an official ADHD diagnosis in order to begin seeing a therapist for support? Knowing what you know now, would you have approached getting help for your ADHD partner differently?
In this conversation, we discuss practical information that may help couples better understand their options, advocate for the care they need, and potentially avoid some of the financial and emotional stress that often comes with navigating the system alone.
One important thing I also learned is that each state may have specific laws or regulations that can help individuals and couples access mental health support. For example, New York State has Timothy's Law, which may help provide additional mental health coverage protections. If you are a mental health professional who specializes in ADHD, or if have been through the process and know your state has specific legislation, programs, or insurance protections that could help other ADHD partners or ADHD couples get the support they need, please leave the information in the comment section and share with others!
