Updated: Jul 9

I will never forget the first time I heard Heidi Bernhardt, Founder of CADDAC, speak. It was 2019, and I was driving, listening to CBC Radio. When she came on, spreading awareness about the Centre, I felt a wave of emotions. As a mother of a child with ADHD, I was thrilled to hear someone share a story and perspective similar to mine. As soon as I got home, I reached out to CADDAC to share my story and inquire how I could get involved. I felt proud and hopeful.

About CADDAC: Champions for ADHD Awareness

CADDAC is a non-profit organization with a mission. They aim to enhance the lives of Canadians impacted by ADHD by focusing on awareness, education, and advocacy. This organization provides national leadership in ADHD, offering vital programs that support individuals of all ages throughout Canada. Their annual ADHD Conference is a cornerstone of their efforts, connecting experts, couples, parents, and community members from across the country.

Why CADDAC Matters

The work that CADDAC does is crucial. They not only provide resources but also foster a supportive community. Their commitment to advocacy makes a significant impact not just on individuals but families as well. The more we understand ADHD, the better we can support those who live with it.

My Personal Experience with CADDAC

Having volunteered with CADDAC, I can attest to the dedication and hard work of their small, committed team and volunteers. Together, they create new services that support the ADHD community as a whole. I am amazed, though not surprised, by how much this organization has grown in the last five years.

Core Programs and Initiatives

Key programs and initiatives include CADDAC’s Executive Functioning program, group coaching programs, educational events, and ongoing awareness and advocacy efforts. CADDAC has become a national reference for ADHD. They work closely with CADDRA (the Canadian ADHD Resource Alliance) and serve as a vital resource for Canadians and professionals alike.

Encouraging Families to Get Involved

I highly recommend Canadian families impacted by ADHD to leverage the resources offered by CADDAC. They provide both no-cost and affordable programs for individuals needing support. This initiative is crucial for families trying to navigate ADHD challenges.

CADDAC Through the Lens of an ADHD Life Coach

As an ADHD Life Coach, I continually share CADDAC’s resources with my clients. Their website is my trusted source of education and advocacy. It provides practical, reliable information on a wide range of needs. Whether clients seek details on the Disability Tax Credit, scholarships, or employment resources, I know I can confidently direct them to CADDAC. Their information is always current, relevant, and trustworthy. It is an invaluable resource for anyone navigating ADHD in Canada.

Support Groups and Coaching Opportunities

CADDAC offers supportive programs that cater to various needs:

  • Free Support Groups: Virtual support groups are available for parents, adults with ADHD, youth, and those navigating ADHD and Substance Use Disorder. Couples find these peer-led groups helpful for understanding each other’s experiences, fostering a supportive network. These drop-in support groups occur monthly and cover suggested topics but allow for open discussion on any relevant issues.

  • Group Coaching: For a minimal fee, youth and adults can access structured group coaching programs. Unlike support groups, these sessions have predetermined topics, offering educational components and assignments. This makes it ideal for individuals or couples seeking to develop specific skills and strategies.

  • Webinars: CADDAC provides affordable (often free) webinars covering a wide array of ADHD-related subjects. Topics include relationship dynamics and communication skills that benefit couples and families alike. Their archive of past sessions is accessible on their website.

  • Annual ADHD Conference: This annual event is a highlight for the Canadian ADHD community. Attending provides opportunities to learn, connect with others, and meet the passionate team behind CADDAC. Sessions focused on relationships and parenting provide valuable strategies for thriving with ADHD.

  • ADHD Resource Directory: CADDAC’s directory is an essential tool that lists services across Canada for individuals with ADHD and their families. Each entry is carefully reviewed by CADDAC’s Resource Navigator, ensuring trustworthiness and relevance.

  • Practical Life Resources: CADDAC also offers actionable information on various topics. From Disability Tax Credit guidance to employment supports, they cover every life stage.

Conclusion: Supporting Families Through Education and Advocacy

CADDAC delivers incredible value to the ADHD community and Canadians at large. Their work in education, advocacy, and support services makes a meaningful difference for individuals with ADHD, their parents, couples, and loved ones. The team is small but mighty, always ready to help and serve the community.

As a parent of young adults with ADHD, a non-ADHD partner, a volunteer, and an ADHD Life Coach, I am proud to support this organization. While there's limited support for non-ADHD partners, much of their content supports understanding the challenges that ADHD family members face. I highly recommend subscribing to CADDAC to stay informed about their offerings and ADHD community events, whether you are navigating ADHD as an individual, a parent, or a couple.
